Sri Lankan navy opened fire on Indian fishermen near Delft Island today, hurting five of them. India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Sri Lankan envoy and registered a strong protest over the incident. As per media reports, two of 13 fishermen sustained serious injuries during the arrest and three others sustained minor injuries and have been treated. The remaining fishermen have been taken into custody, according to the officials. The arrests by the Sri Lankan navy took place after the group of fishermen allegedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary around Delft Island and were fishing in the territorial waters of the island nation. New Delhi has called Colombo’s action unacceptable, while the Sri Lankan navy claims that the firing was accidental.
